The Red Devils definitely won the battle in the trenches all night long, and were able to move the ball at will against the Cheyenne Central Indians. They also dominated the Indians in the second half. Unfortunately, they had some critical turnovers that twarted good drives, and let a talented Central team burn them for three long td passes in the first half.
This is not a team that makes excuses, but they were without the leadership of starting seniors MLB Wes Scanlon (Casper Star-Tribune Super 25 returner - ankle injury) and FS Caleb Guild, (back injury), and I believe if these two teams happen to meet again, the outcome will be different. That's not to take anything away from Central's effort...
Cody Saloga ran hard and the o-line allowed him to do so, finishing with 130 yards on 25 carries. Jamis Short seemed to be keyed upon all night, and that's no surprise - check the 5A stats - but still combined 39 yards on the ground with 62 receiving on 4 catches. Kyle Crandall was 7 for 16 for 107 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTS. His touchdown pass was caught and run in by Chance Keyes from 28 yards out for the Red Devils lone score.
Brick Cegelski, Jr. (the son of Cheyenne Indian head football coach Brick Cegelski) was absolutely perfect through the air in the first half going 6-6 for 197 yards and 3 TD's, two of 45 yards to Cory Wheeler and one of 53 to Brian Hill - both Cheyenne wide-outs eclipsed the century mark in receiving yards.
The Indians amassed 231 yards in the first half - 34 on the ground and 197 through the air, and ended the game with 274. Evanston rushed for 66 in the first half, while passing for 31 for a 1st total of 97, but ended with 140 on the ground and 121 via the airel assault for a game-total of 261. The Red Devils had 15 first downs to the Indian's 7.*
Up next for the Red Devils - the Laramie Plainsmen ride into town for a Red Devil Homecoming 5A South show-down, while Central hosts cross-town rival Cheyenne East.
